Why the patio plan is its own thing
Front yard lighting is for people looking at the house. The patio is a place you occupy. Everything changes when you become the audience from within. Nobody cares how the patio reads from the road. The only test is whether anybody wants to sit there. All of which adds up to one point. A roofline system does a great deal for the front of a house and very little for the space behind it. Two spaces, two separate sets of requirements to satisfy.
Glare ruins more patios than darkness does
The fastest way to make a patio feel wrong is a bright fixture in somebody's line of sight. A bare bulb at eye height makes everything behind it disappear, so the rest of the property vanishes. The fix is to put light low, high, or behind something: step lights, under rail, up in the trees, or behind a planter.
String lights overhead do more than they should be able to
Strung lights above a patio create a ceiling where there was not one. A patio without them is a slab under an open sky. With them it reads as a defined space. Keep them warm and low, always.None of this costs much more than doing it badly, because the difference is mostly placement and color rather than the number of fixtures on the invoice.
Layers, the way a designer thinks about it
A patio works best with a few layers rather than one solution. Overhead, underfoot, and a feature or two. Separate switching is worth asking for.
Restaurants and businesses have the same problem with higher stakes
For a business with outdoor seating, the lighting decides whether

Warm overhead light turns an empty evening patio into occupied tables. Nothing changes technically. The stakes are just higher.
Lighting stretches the season
An unlit patio stops being usable in October. A lit one stays open through the shoulder months and into the evening year round. Mild evenings happen most of the year here, and the dark is what keeps people indoors. The lighting is the thing standing between a nice evening and an unused patio.
Something worth knowing about color
Anybody who has sat under a bright outdoor light in July knows what shows up. Insects respond more to cooler and bluer light than to warm light, which is a second argument for keeping patio light warm. It helps. It is not a solution. But it is worth factoring in.Worth adding: the same warm setting suits the roofline above the patio, so the two do not disagree with each other.
